Behind the Scenes: Why Writing Prompts Aren’t for Everyone
And Why Freestyling Can Be Magic
Every so often someone asks me, “Do you use writing prompts?”
And the answer is sometimes. But very rarely.
Because honestly? Not every writer thrives with them—and that’s okay.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes truth:
Writing prompts can be wonderful little sparks.
They can shake things loose, jumpstart a stubborn brain, or send you down a creative rabbit hole you didn’t know you needed.
They’re fun, they’re playful, and they absolutely have their place.
But prompts aren’t for everyone.
Some of us are freestylers at heart.
Some of us write best when we wander into a blank page with nothing but vibes, caffeine, and a chaotic muse who refuses to color inside the lines.
Some of us need to let the story tell us what it wants instead of squeezing it into a pre-packaged shape.
When I freestyle, that’s when the real magic happens.
Characters speak louder. Plot twists appear out of nowhere. Entire worlds unfold without warning. It feels less like writing a book and more like watching a movie that only plays in my head—and I’m just trying to keep up.
Prompts can sometimes feel like little fences. Helpful fences! But still fences.
For me, freestyling feels like running barefoot across a field and yelling, “Let’s see how weird this gets!”
And honestly? Some of my favorite scenes, lines, and characters were born from those wild, unprompted moments where I stopped worrying about structure and just let the story breathe.
So if prompts work for you? Amazing.
If they don’t? Also amazing.
There is no single right way to create something magical.
Your process is valid. Your chaos is valid.
And sometimes the best thing you can do is trust your instincts, take a deep breath, and freestyle your way into the story that’s been waiting for you all along. 💖✨
