✍️ Behind the Scenes: Research, Reading, and Writing Across Worlds
Just more ramblings from an Indie Author...
One of my favorite parts of being a writer? Research.
Whether I’m diving into paranormal lore, mapping out a fantasy realm, or making sure a contemporary romance detail rings true, research is one of those secret ingredients that makes the story come alive.
It’s part of the job I actually love—because for me, exploring different worlds is half the fun of creating them.
That same love of exploring is why I never stick to just one lane. I mean, plenty of people have told me I should. Pick a genre, settle down, stay in your box.
But I was never very good at following directions. Go figure.
If someone tells me “write only small-town romance,” my brain immediately says, Cool, but what if the small town is also secretly full of Werewolves, and the local bakery is run by a Witch who accidentally hexes the donut holes?
Or if they say, “Stick to one series at a time,” suddenly I’ve got six characters from completely different worlds knocking on my mental door like, Excuse me, author, but when do I get my happily ever after?
So yeah. Lanes? I hop them like a frog in rush hour. (Hopefully, with more success than my last attempt at that video game.) 🚦🐸
Because why not? Reading is an adventure, and writing should be too.
I mean, yes, I write romance, but within that I play in so many subgenres. Paranormal, urban fantasy, romantasy, small-town, steamy contemporary, darkish romance, and more.
To me, it’s like reading. Not everyone likes the same thing all the time. I know I don’t!
My own shelves are filled with mysteries, thrillers, fantasy epics, romcoms, and everything in between.
Writing across genres lets me chase the stories that excite me and (hopefully!) keep things fresh for you, my readers.
Because at the heart of it, no matter the world, the magic, or the mayhem, or the mates, there’s always romance. 💕
Now I want to hear from you:
👉 What genres do you like to read? Do you stick to one favorite, or do you like to mix it up the way I do?
Drop your answer in the comments—I love seeing what everyone’s into right now!
