🦞 One squishy emotional-support lobster named Leo with terrifying pop-out eyes
And approximately six square inches of actual desk space.

People often imagine authors working in beautiful offices with matching furniture, color-coded notebooks, and a pristine workspace worthy of a Pinterest board.

I’m sure those authors exist.

I am not one of them.

My reality usually involves balancing coffee next to a stack of notes while digging through open files trying to remember why I wrote things like:

“Make him growl more.”
“Add peanut butter.”
“Absolutely no more tea.”

At the time, these notes made perfect sense. Now?

They’re cryptic messages from a past version of myself that I must somehow decipher.

And yet, somehow, the books still get written.

That’s the funny thing about creativity.

When we’re new to writing—or really any creative pursuit—we often believe we need the perfect system before we can be productive.

The perfect office.
The perfect software.
The perfect planner.
The perfect routine.
The perfect amount of uninterrupted time.

But after more than a decade of publishing, I’ve learned something important:

Perfect is wildly overrated.

Some days the words flow.
Some days they don’t.
Some days I hit five thousand words before breakfast.
Some days I spend an hour searching for a note I know I wrote somewhere.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is progress.

The manuscript doesn’t care if your desk is messy.

The story doesn’t care if your notes are scattered across three notebooks and twenty-seven tabs.

The characters don’t care if you’re writing at a beautiful custom desk or at the kitchen table.

They just need you to show up.

One sentence.
One paragraph.
One chapter at a time.

If you’ve been writing for more than five minutes, chances are you’ve received advice.

A lot of advice.

Advice from other writers.
Advice from readers.
Advice from industry experts.
Advice from people who have never written a book but somehow know exactly how you should write yours.

And the advice?

Write every day.
Don’t write every day.
Plot everything.
Never plot.
Write to market.
Don’t chase trends.
Use social media.
Avoid social media.
Publish fast.
Publish slow.
Go exclusive.
Go wide.
Write short.
Write long.
Use tropes.
Avoid tropes.

By the time you’ve listened to everyone, you’re left wondering if the only correct way to be an author is to somehow do all of these things at once.

Here’s the truth I’ve learned after more than a decade in publishing:

Most writing advice isn’t wrong.

It’s just incomplete.

Because what worked for one author may be completely wrong for another.

No one approach is automatically better. They’re all just different roads leading to the same destination.

That’s why one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is this:

March to the tune of your own piper.

Not the loudest voice in the room.
Not the latest social media guru.
Not the author making six figures in a genre you don’t even write.

Your own piper.

Because nobody understands your goals, your schedule, your life circumstances, or your creative process better than you do.

So here’s my unsolicited writing advice:

Write the books you want to write.

Learn the craft.
Learn the business.
Listen carefully.

But don’t surrender your instincts.

March to the tune of your own piper.

Even if everyone else thinks you’re going the wrong way.

Especially then.

Because sometimes the path nobody understands is the one that leads exactly where you’re supposed to be.

And if you’ve been waiting for your workspace, your schedule, or your process to become perfect before you create something, consider this your permission slip to stop waiting.

Create in the chaos.
Write in the mess.
Build the thing anyway.

And if all else fails?

Get yourself a judgmental emotional-support lobster!

Even after twelve years of publishing… this part never changes.

Finishing a series is always emotional for me.

It’s a proud moment, of course. There’s relief and excitement and that little burst of happiness that comes from finally putting the last piece into place. But at the same time?

Part of me always longs for the beginning again.

For that very first spark of an idea.

That moment where a tiny concept suddenly starts growing into something bigger. A setting. A voice. A hero. A scene that won’t leave you alone until you write it down.

Because readers see the finished books on the shelves… but behind the scenes, a series becomes part of your actual life for months, sometimes years.

You spend countless hours building these worlds.

Living inside these characters’ heads.

Plotting their heartbreaks, their healing, their love stories.

There’s emotional energy poured into every chapter.

Physical energy too.

Late nights.
Early mornings.
Rewrites.
Deleted scenes.
Plot tangles.
Random inspiration while folding laundry or driving to the grocery store.

We’ve all been there.

And no—I’m not talking about the one-star reviews that torch everything you’ve poured your heart and soul into.

Those? Honestly, they’re almost easier to dismiss because they’re so extreme.

I’m talking about the pesky 3- and 4-star reviews.

The ones where the reader “liked it, but…”
And suddenly that but is louder than every good thing they just said.

They’ll compliment the story, the characters, the romance…
and then drop one tiny critique like it’s nothing.

“The pacing felt a little off.”
“I couldn’t fully connect with the heroine.”
“The ending was rushed.”

And that one line?

Yeah. That’s the one that moves in. Unpacks a suitcase. Pays rent in your brain for the next three days.

You’ll be brushing your teeth thinking about it.
Trying to fall asleep? Nope—your mind is replaying that sentence like it’s a courtroom exhibit.

You start second-guessing everything.

Was the pacing off?
Did I rush that scene?
Should I have rewritten the ending?
Wait… is this book actually bad??

And then there are the silent star droppers.

Three stars. Four stars.

No explanation. No context. No feedback.

And somehow those can hit even harder.

Because now your brain fills in the blanks for them.

What didn’t they like?
Was it the characters? The plot? The spice? Too much? Not enough?

You don’t know.

And because you don’t know, your brain decides to be extra helpful and invents every possible worst-case scenario.

That’s the trap.

Not the review itself—but what we do with it after.

So what do you do as a writer?

The answer is simple—and also incredibly hard:

Nothing.

Here’s the truth a lot of authors don’t want to hear (or need reminding of):

Reviews are not for you.

They feel like they should be. They’re about your book, your characters, your story.

But they’re not your space.

They’re not your arena.

Reviews are for readers.

They’re a conversation between readers deciding what to pick up next, what they loved, what didn’t hit for them. And sometimes? That means your book gets picked apart in ways that feel personal.

But it’s not personal.

Even when it feels like it is.

So… should you ever listen to reviews?

Here’s where it gets tricky.

If multiple readers are pointing out the same issue—editing problems, pacing, lack of character development—then yes, that might be something to take note of privately.

But diving into reviews looking for ways to “fix yourself”?

That’s a fast track to burnout.

Because, here is the truth, you cannot write a book that works for everyone.

And the moment you try, you lose the thing that makes your stories yours.

What actually helps?

Share

Instead of living in your reviews section, build a space that does belong to you:

Your editors (who will tell you the truth before publication).

Your proofreaders (who catch the polish issues).

Your beta readers (who flag story concerns early).

Your ARC team (who help shape launch momentum).

Your author friends (who get it without explanation).

These are your people. Your sounding board. Your safety net.

Let them help you grow.

Let readers… read.

The reality no one talks about enough

A 3- or 4-star review is still someone finishing your book.

Still someone engaging with your story.

Still someone caring enough to have an opinion.

That doesn’t make the sting disappear—but it does put it into perspective.

My take?

Don’t go there.

Don’t spiral. Don’t dissect every word. Don’t let a stranger’s passing thought outweigh the thousands of words you created.

Protect your creative space like it matters—because it does.

Write the stories you want to tell.

Build the team that supports you.

And leave the reviews where they belong: With the readers.

If you find yourself in this line of work, try to remember why you started in the first place.

You’re writing for a reason.

Because something in you needs to tell stories.
Because the characters won’t leave you alone until you put them on the page.
Because creating worlds, building relationships, making readers feel something—that’s not just a hobby.

It’s your calling.
It’s your purpose.
It’s what you’re meant to do.

And that part? That’s the heart of it. The part no review can touch unless you let it.

Everything else?

The business side of indie authoring—the marketing, the launches, the algorithms, the sales pages, the reviews…

That’s work.

Learned work.

And part of that learning curve is figuring out where to place things mentally—especially reviews.

Not every comment deserves a seat at your creative table.
Not every opinion gets to shape your voice.

Reviews belong in the “reader space.”
Your creativity belongs in yours.

Once you separate the two?

It gets a whole lot easier to keep writing.

Courses. Masterclasses. “You HAVE to do this if you want to succeed” energy.

And listen—I’ve taken courses. Paid ones. Free ones. All of it.

Some helped. Some… not so much.

What I’ve learned is this: 👉 If it doesn’t fit you or your brand, you don’t have to follow it.

The real skill? Learning how to filter the noise.

“Do what you love” is great in theory.

This is my full-time job, and I treat it like one. I’m writing, planning, marketing, editing, plotting… constantly.

Because writer brain?

And suddenly the anxiety? The chaos? The overthinking?

• Consistent timeline & events.

• Crossovers shine when readers can spot overlapping moments from different POVs.

• Communication = smooth magic. Regular check-ins keep plot holes, continuity issues, and confusion out of the story.

• Play to each author’s strengths.

• Respecting and knowing your partner is important. And so is sharing the glory.

• Let each voice shine while still blending seamlessly for the reader experience.

• Cross-promotion is key.

• This is the best part of working on a project like this. Sharing audiences—newsletter swaps, social posts, and joint hype build momentum for both books.

• Easter eggs make it fun.

• Hidden references, cameos, and callbacks reward readers who pick up both stories.

• Reader-first mindset.

• While the point is to cross promote, each book should still stand alone while enhancing the crossover experience.

At the end of the day, writing is a craft—and working with other authors only makes us better, helping us learn, grow, and keep honing our skills with every story we tell.

If you’ve been reading my work for a while, you may have noticed a few little Easter eggs scattered throughout my stories. A familiar town name. A passing mention of a character. A place that shows up again in an entirely different series. Sometimes the connection is obvious, and sometimes it’s subtle enough that only the most eagle-eyed readers catch it.

And honestly? I love that part.

Because to me, stories don’t exist in isolation. Worlds grow. People cross paths. Places hold history. And sometimes the most interesting connections happen where you least expect them—even between completely different genres.

Let me give you a fun example.

The Motley Crewd Shifters

If you’ve read my Motley Crewd Shifters series, then you already know the vibe.

Once upon a time…

Nah, scratch that. These aren’t those kinds of stories.

Yes, there are supernatural creatures.

Yes, there’s magic.

And yes, there’s love.

But there’s also crude behavior, foul language, and more than a few boorish alpha males with questionable manners and extremely possessive instincts. These guys are rough around the edges and proud of it.

The series follows a crew of supernatural misfits trying to navigate fate, loyalty, and the one thing they never thought they’d have a shot at controlling.

Their own destinies.

Because if there’s one thing the Fates love doing, it’s proving that none of us are as in control as we think we are—especially when it comes to love.

Those stories take place in the fictional town of Dry Creek in Barren County, New Jersey, where the supernatural world hides just beneath the surface of everyday life.

Dry Creek is one of those places where strange things happen.

Where danger lurks around the corner.

Where loyalty matters.

And where the family you choose can matter more than the one you were born into.

Or in this case…

the Crew.

But Here’s Where It Gets Fun

My upcoming release Sawyer also takes place in Dry Creek.

That’s right. Same town.

But this time the story isn’t paranormal.

Instead, we’re stepping into the gritty world of Jersey Iron Ranch, where bulls, business deals, and dangerous alliances rule the day.

And at the center of it all is a man who absolutely did not plan on falling for trouble.

She’s a lil bit of trouble.

He’s a whole lot of man.

Sawyer DeWitt didn’t buy Jersey Iron Ranch to babysit problems.

He bought it to build an empire—champion bulls, champion bloodlines, and the kind of reputation that puts a rancher on the map.

The kind that also puts a target on his back.

All Sawyer needs is time, muscle, and a little luck.

The last thing he needs is Elisabeth Corona.

She calls herself Bit, and trouble seems to follow wherever she goes. Fire in her eyes. A gang at her back. And a sharp tongue that cuts straight through Sawyer’s control.

She’s reckless.

She’s bold.

She’s irresistible.

And when she shows up at his ranch asking for protection, the only thought running through Sawyer’s head is one simple word:

Why I Love Doing This

To me, using the same setting across different stories creates something special.

It makes the world feel alive.

Dry Creek isn’t just a location—it’s a place where different kinds of stories unfold. Sometimes supernatural. Sometimes gritty and grounded. Sometimes romantic, sometimes dangerous.

But always connected.

Readers who’ve spent time there before might recognize certain places. Maybe a familiar bar. Maybe a name mentioned in passing. Maybe something subtle that hints the worlds aren’t as separate as they seem.

Those little moments are my way of saying thank you to longtime readers who enjoy spotting the threads.

Now I’m Curious…

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in this business is this:

Stop trying to do what everyone else is doing.

Seriously. Just stop.

It’s incredibly easy to get swept up in the constant stream of advice floating around the indie publishing world. Every day there’s another post, another thread, another video telling you that if you want to “make it,” you have to be doing X, Y, and Z.

You should be rapid releasing.
You should be writing to market.
You should be running ads on three platforms.
You should be doing audiobooks.
You should be launching a Kickstarter.
You should be selling direct.
You should be on TikTok.
You should be posting daily.
You should be writing faster.

And before you know it, you’re trying to juggle fifteen different strategies that may or may not even make sense for the kind of career you want.

But here’s the truth I’ve learned after years in this industry:

What works for those geese doesn’t always work for this one.

Not all of us have the same destiny.

Not all of us have the same path.

And we certainly don’t all have the same interests, strengths, or bandwidth.

Some authors thrive investing heavily in audiobooks and building huge audio catalogs.

Some authors do incredibly well writing short, punchy serials that readers binge in a weekend.

Some build beautiful special editions with art and collectibles that their readers adore.
Some authors love newsletters and community building.

Others would rather just write the next book (ME).

All of those paths are valid.

But here’s the part I wish more people said out loud:

You don’t have to do it all.

You don’t have to be on every platform.
You don’t have to follow every trend.
And you definitely don’t have to do something just because someone else says you should.

The real key is figuring out three things:

• What you actually enjoy doing
• What you’re realistically able to sustain
• What kind of author career you want to build

Because this isn’t a hobby for most of us. It’s a career. And careers aren’t built by copying someone else’s blueprint line by line.

They’re built by experimenting, learning, adapting, and figuring out what works for you.

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the constant noise of “must-do” advice, let me offer this reminder:

March to your own drummer, friends.

Your path might look different.

Your timeline might look different.

Your strategy might look different.

And that’s not a failure.

Sometimes that’s exactly what makes it work.

Save yourself some sanity.

Trust your instincts.

And build the author career that actually fits you. Hang in there.

Typos.

Somewhere along the line, indie authors got branded with this idea that we produce “unpolished” work. That if you read self-published, you should expect errors.

Here’s the truth:

Typos happen. Period.
Not because someone doesn’t care.
Not because someone isn’t professional.
But because publishing — traditional or indie — is a human process.

And human error is real.

This is not just an indie thing. Not even close.

Here is a list of some traditionally published, massive bestselling titles that readers publicly noted had errors in early printings or digital editions (and I found this by doing a simple search):

• The Women (2024) by Kristin Hannah – readers reported punctuation and spelling issues in early, fast-tracked editions.

• Fourth Wing / Iron Flame (2023–2024) by Rebecca Yarros – high-demand releases from Red Tower (Macmillan) that had reported typos in early printings due to intense production pressure.

• The Housemaid series (2024–2025) by Freida McFadden – readers mentioned editing inconsistencies in both ebook and paperback versions.

• Recent Stephen King releases (like You Like It Darker, 2024) – even top-tier authors with powerhouse publishers aren’t immune to early edition errors.

• The 50th Anniversary edition of The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath – yes, even classics have had QC issues in new printings.

So no — this is not an indie author problem.
It’s a publishing reality.

Books are edited by professionals. Then proofed. Then formatted. Then converted to multiple file types. Then uploaded across platforms that sometimes reflow text or introduce glitches.

And still sometimes something slips through.

Indie authors are often working with smaller teams. Sometimes it’s one proofreader. Sometimes two. Sometimes three passes. Sometimes more.

But we don’t have a New York publishing house’s multi-layered (and still imperfect) production machine behind us.

We care deeply about quality. At least I know I do.

And here’s something I want to say gently.

There is a big difference between saying, “Hey, I loved this book! I spotted a small typo on page 147 — thought you’d want to know!” And reporting a book to a platform in a way that can damage an author’s account or livelihood.

One helps.
One can seriously hurt.

When a reader sends me a kind message pointing out an error? I’m grateful. Truly. I fix it. I update the file asap.

That’s one of the beauties of digital publishing — we can correct things quickly.

But when stereotypes creep in — “Well, that’s what you get with indie…” — that stings.

Because indie authors are professionals. We invest in editing. We invest in covers. We invest in formatting, marketing, software, proofreaders, beta readers, ARC teams. This is not a hobby. This is our career.

So here’s my gentle ask.

When you rate and review, be kind.
Be honest, absolutely.
But don’t assume imperfection equals incompetence.

If you loved the story, the characters, the emotion—let that weigh in too.

And if you find an error? Message the author if you can. Most of us are incredibly appreciative.

At the end of the day, we’re all human beings telling stories and hoping they connect.

I hope you love the books.
I hope they make you feel something.
I hope you’re entertained for a bit when you read them.
And I hope we keep building a reading community that chooses generosity over stereotypes.

I started self-publishing in 2014. And when I say I started small, I mean small. No giant launch team. No massive ads budget. No overnight bestseller fairy sprinkling sparkles on my keyboard.

Just me.
A story (Wolf Moon).
And the willingness to keep going.

Over the years, I learned formatting. Covers. Marketing. Distribution. Direct sales. Kickstarter. Audiobooks. Wide strategy. What worked. What flopped spectacularly. What I never want to do again. 😅

I didn’t “suddenly” get fast. I built systems.

My qualifications? I don’t know. Life? I mean, yes, I earned a BA in English Lit. And i know, people love to joke that an English degree is useless.

But here I am.

My useless BA in English taught me structure, pacing, literary analysis, editing discipline, and how to think critically about story. It trained my brain to see narrative patterns. It gave me the technical foundation that now lets me write instinctively and revise efficiently.

So maybe, it wasn’t useless. Maybe it was training.

Now, back to my career. See, being a writer is my job. My profession. The thing I do that contributes to my household and family.

This is the part that matters most.

Writing isn’t my hobby.
It isn’t a side hustle.
It isn’t something I fit in when I feel like it.
It’s my career.

I work every single day on my craft—from the first spark of an idea to drafting chapters at lightning speed to reviewing proofs and approving covers. Even when I’m not typing, I’m thinking about story. About character arcs. About emotional beats. About marketing hooks.

Romance is fast-paced and emotional. And I write that way intentionally. My books are designed to move. To feel. To grab you by the throat (lovingly) and drag you straight to the HEA.

Some people ask why I don’t stay in one lane or why I don’t have a dozen pen names.

First, I know I genre hop. I do it a lot.

Paranormal.
Dark romance.
Sports romance.
Romantic suspense.
Small-town.
Romantasy.
Urban Fantasy.
Monster romance.

Why don’t I pick just one?

Because my brain doesn’t work that way.
Blame it on:
An overactive imagination
A curiosity problem

Here’s what really allows me to publish quickly:
I know my voice.
I know my tropes.
I know my workflow.

I don’t reinvent the wheel every book. I have:
Cover design software I trust.
Editors who know my style.
Formatting software I can’t live without.
Marketing/Distribution plans ready to plug in and go.

When you’ve been doing something for over a decade, you build muscle memory. Publishing becomes a process, not a mystery.

But speed doesn’t mean sloppy. It means:
Strong habits.
Trusting your instincts.
Finishing what you start.

And that last one? That’s huge.
I finish the book. Every. Single. One.

The real secret to writing and publishing quickly?
Consistency.

Just show up. I know I do.
Even when I’m sick or tired.
Even when algorithms are weird.
Even when imposter syndrome whispers.
Even when I’m juggling three series and a Kickstarter.
Because this isn’t luck.
